"Lower Mainland - In Brief: Richmond"

City council reiterated this week its support for the Vancouver-Whistler Olympic bid for the 2010 Winter Games while continuing to demand a rapid transit system. Don Calder, chief executive officer of the Vancouver-Whistler 2010 bid corporation, detailed to council Monday the proposal to land the games. A rapid transit system between Vancouver International Airport in Richmond and downtown Vancouver is critical for a successful bid, said Calder. "What we need to determine are the various levels of government committed to delivering that in the time frame required," he said. Councillor Bill McNulty said he hopes Ottawa will now listen to Richmond's cry for rapid transit. A Richmond rapid transit plan involving various stakeholders is now in a phase where potential private partners are being sought.
