TransLink's Strategic Transportation Plan proposes a host of major new road and transit initiatives to improve transportation options throughout the Greater Vancouver Regional District between 2000 and 2005.
This Plan aims to:
- upgrade the Major Road Network (including the construction of new roads at key locations);
- create more frequent and less crowded transit services - with the goal of increasing transit use by 30 percent; and
- expand rail capacity.
These initiatives are expected to reduce commute times; slow the growth of traffic congestion to allow for better goods movement throughout the region; and reduce climate changing greenhouse gas emissions and local air pollution.
This Plan illustrates the importance of an "integrated" approach to solving our transportation problems - one where both transit and road improvements work together.
The Strategic Transportation Plan, along with the GVRD's Livable Region Strategic Plan, play a critical role in the efficiency and overall success of our region.
